LOCATIONS

The RISEAL is a federation of associations operating in West Africa (Burkina Faso www.risealbf.org, Ivory Cost, Mali, Niger (www.risealniger.org(, Senegal, Togo), in Madagascar www. riseal-madagascar.org) and in Europe (http://riseal.europe.monsite-orange.fr).

HISTORY

RISEAL’s origins go back to the 1970s when a schistosomiasis laboratory was set up in the Parasitological Department of Centre Muraz in Bobo Dioulasso.

Centre Muraz was one of the research centres of the OCCGE (Organisation for the Coordination and Cooperation of Major Endemic Disease Control), which had seven member countries in West Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo.

Based initially in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina (1970–80), and subsequently Niamey, Niger (1980–94), where it founded CERMES (Centre for Research into Meningitis and Schistosomiasis),

this team of researchers drawn from both African and French bodies, such as the IRD (Institute of Research for Development) and the French Ministry of Cooperation and Development, spent 24 years travelling the length and breadth of the OCCGE’s seven member countries mapping the distribution of   schistosomiasis.

It simultaneously conducted research into epidemiology, malacology, ultrasound and the biology of the schistosomiasis populations and their intermediate hosts.

Between 1994 and 2000 the team worked in Madagascar, where it won recognition for its research on health and the environment and extended its areas of expertise to the social sciences.

During the 24 years it spent in West Africa, the team trained a large number of individuals who went on to hold positions within the different national tropical disease control programmes.

In 2000 the members of this team decided to form an association called Réseau International Schistosomoses Environnement Aménagements et Lutte in response to the geographical fragmentation of this expertise.

Since 2003, the RISEAL has supported the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) which, with the funds of the Foundation Bill and Melinda Gates, has participated in the development of the National Control Programs of Schistosomiases and the intestinal Worms in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

In 2006 it undertook with the SCI the integrated control against the neglected diseases with USAID funds managed by RTI (Research Triangle Institute).

For the last half-year 2007, next to the Italian Association Carlo Urbani and the WHO, RISEAL has supported the Ministère de la santé et de la Promotion Sociale of Madagascar in its Program of integrated control against the Neglected Diseases.
